Open-plan educational environments are challenging from a design perspective. Rusty from CSR explained the importance of balancing needs of teachers and students and in providing speech privacy whilst controlling noise.
Selecting material for acoustic absorption must also be balanced with other considerations such as colour fastness, sustainability and fire compliancy. Attendees learnt about speech, its perception and a brief look at how sound behaves in a space, as well as how design of spaces has an impact on human speech and its perception. They gained an understanding of how absorbent material effects sound, how much is needed and if the placement of material makes a difference.
